Taking a break…
August 16, 2009 at 6:58 am | In 1 | 1 Comment
…probably for a while (from blogging that is). I need a little break to regroup & get myself together… I am sure that means that anyone who might actually read this thing will stop, that’s okay, but maybe check back down the road. If you read this & you are some one that actually knows me… then you know where to find me, if not Adios for now!
Photo Friday…and the winner of $500 is

The guy only two people down from me (not pictured above…but this was the device that was used to determine the winner at random)! So sad I know but I did enjoy standing in the rain inviting strangers (some drunk) to stare at my art…& subsequently me…for an hour yesterday. Go art!
Dealing In The Streets…art that is

Sheesh what were you thinking? What kind of dealing WOULD I be talking about? Art of course… because tonight is the final of Vital 5’s Arbitrary Art Grants & and it’s all about being an art dealer. I admired from afar when they offered up the chance to make a sculpture in a shopping cart, design a poster & dance like being shot at…but now I am going to get of my duff and participate. I am not sure WHY the idea of standing in the cold for an hour with some of my art hung around my neck like I am Flava Flav sounds so great, but it does. If you want all the details read more here at Vital 5’s blog.
For my art I am thinking about printing a really huge ‘polaroid’ picture see examples above…I like things out of scale (small things big, big things small etc.) …they always make me happy!
Font Fabulousness

Font Shaker is wonderful…okay well wonderful for designers, type nerds, etc. It is a great simple place to browse your fonts in a highly visual way, because lets face it you can memorize typefaces all you want but sometimes you just need to see them! Check Font Shaker, it’s worth the click.
Photo Friday…a rainbow of color

More Museum Fun

The New York Times had a great article today about people & how they interact with art in museums.
I love this topic, I am on the side of there isn’t a wrong or right way to explore a museum. There are days when I only want to sit in front of two paintings for hours but sometimes all I want is to stroll leisurely through each room only pausing occasionally.
The photo above was from my own trip to the Louvre where I spent 4 hours running around losing myself in the sculpture galleries & utterly random wings full of paintings I vaquely remembered from early art history courses…I only paused to eat an overpriced waffle covered in powdered sugar. Tip: Eat before you go to museums… most food eaten in museum cafes when desperate will be megh.
Museums Make Me Happy

…and they can make you happy too! I just read 10 Reasons to Visit a Museum & I think my favorite was #9:
9. Museums are free… sometimes.
Several museums nationwide offer free admission during specified hours or days of the week. Visit the website of your favorite museum to see if they feature something like this. Several museums offer free events as well…
Read the other 9 reasons here.
In other museum news, starting September 7th the SAM will be closed two days each week (Mondays as before with the exception of Holidays & now Tuesdays as well) instead of just one, sad I know! Boo economic downturn!
PS the slightly blurry image is of the SAM & was taken back in the day on my RZR hence the low quality, enjoy!
Photo Friday…around the garden + new goals
July 31, 2009 at 11:05 am | In Home + Garden, Photography | 1 CommentTags: garden, Green, Photography, seattle, Yellow

Seattle weather this week was insane, like 103 degrees insane, which is why I haven’t posted much (yeah that’s it… I will blame it on the weather & not my lack of motivation). To beat the heat I mostly hung out in the studio on the first floor & in the garden. I have to say though my garden is going wild so the heat was worth it. (See more photos here.)
Even with the heat though I have been trying to stay artistically productive. As of recent I decided to get to know my cameras again. Since my last photography class was 7 years ago (wow that makes me feel so old) I have forgotten a lot! So my goal for the next month is to participate in a new Flickr group every week in August (and post at least one photo to the group per day) in the hopes that this will get me back in the photography swing of things. I have been posting this week as a warm up but next week will be my official start…so wish me luck!
Here are the groups I am thinking about posting to:
Color My World Daily
Urban Fragments
My Flailing Limbs
Empty Seats
SAM | Painting Under Attack
July 22, 2009 at 2:42 pm | In Artsy | Leave a CommentTags: art, Exhibit, Painting, Seattle Art Museum
Seattle Art Museum’s new exhibit, Painting Under Attack (which runs until September 7th) simply put rocks (and no this is not a term I used when writing Art History papers long ago). But really when you need to escape the world (as I do most lunch breaks I get) nothing beats complexity wrapped inside simplicity.
My favorites included Richard Jackson’s wall painting (see the video above for a snippet of Jackson creating the piece at SAM), Yoko Ono’s piece where visitors have created an out of control wall full of stuff nailed to it from their pockets, & the video in which __ (sorry blanking on the name but I will fill it in after I go watch it again) paints a room a new color each day…it is mesmerizing, I swear I need a longer lunch hour so I can see the whole thing all at once.
*Note* to loud museum goers that enjoy using the phrase ‘I could do that’ when looking at art (excluding your favorite dogs playing poker or Thomas Kincade paintings)… please stay home because this probably isn’t the exhibit for you & the people who ARE enjoying it have access to nails & hammers (thanks Yoko) & you saying ‘I could do THAT’ one more time might just push a true art lover over the edge…kidding (or am I).
Summer Books

Here are a few of the things that have been keeping me MIA out in the sun. Ahhh summer reading, there really is nothing more amazing than a good book & a day of sun. Here are a few books from my list…
For Reading…
My Life in France (Julia Child is my new hero)
The School of Essential Ingredients (an easy 2 day read but lovely!)
Mythology (I am brushing up for my trip to Greece)
For Learning…
Frommer’s Greece (yup more Greece!)
National Geographic: Greece
For Crafting…
50 Wallpaper Projects (I liked this one but none of the projects fired me up enough to actually do them)
Sew & Stow (I actually bought this for a friend awhile ago so I thought I would grab it from the library & try my hand at some of the projects)
